EQUIPPING CREATIVE COMMUNITIES TO INVESTIGATE AND SHAPE AI
The Lab for AI, Ethics, & Creative Labor at The New School explores how artificial intelligence is transforming creative industries, from gig economy freelancers to seasoned professionals. Through empirical research, tool development, curriculum design, and public programming, the lab equips creative communities, students and practitioners to critically engage with AI technologies and their implications..

Going beyond rules or priciples
The Lab for AI + Creative Labor explores how artificial intelligence is transforming creative industries, from freelance gig workers to established professionals in design, music, and writing. Through empirical research and public tools, the lab investigates how AI is altering creative workflows, authorship, labor conditions, and the production of knowledge across disciplines.
Rather than viewing AI ethics as a fixed framework, the lab approaches it as a situated, world-building practice. Its work foregrounds the political, social, ecological, and economic dimensions of AI, drawing from plural traditions that emphasize relationality, self-formation, and collective care. By critically engaging with the histories that shape AI’s development, the lab reimagines more equitable futures for creativity, labor, and technological innovation.
