HS-HE Lab
ADDRESSING EQUITY GAPS IN DESIGN EDUCATION ACCESS
Initiated in 2025, HS-HE lab focuses on learning about the barriers that limit access to design education for students in the NYC tri-state area.
Our Impact
Despite mid-career designers in NYC earning $95k–$125k annually—outpacing the state average—design remains largely absent from high school core curricula.
Our initiatives address potential equity gaps in design education access. We believe that by disaggregating design from ‘art’ or ‘STEM’ alone, we can reveal pathways to lucrative, 21st-century careers for all students. Our work is grounded in the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the World Economic Forum’s ‘Future of Jobs’ report, ensuring our research is as globally relevant as it is locally impactful.
Through workshops, field studies, academic research, and strategic partnerships with secondary school leaders, we provide insights and support for public high schools that seek to create more expansive learning and career pathways for their students.
