Parsons DEED Lab

EMPOWERING ARTISANS THROUGH COLLABORATIVE DESIGN AND SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

DEED(Development through Empowerment, Entrepreneurship, and Design) Lab is a research laboratory founded in 2007 at Parsons School for Design, The New School, New York City. We focus on the future of indigenous artisans and their children. Through fieldwork programs, strategic partnerships, and academic research, our focus is on models that equally support poverty alleviation, artisan empowerment, and cultural preservation.

Our Impact

DEED Lab engages in collaborative efforts with students, faculty, artisan groups in emerging economies, foundations, individual donors, retailers, and external partners. The lab's work is guided by addressing questions around cultural preservation, transparency in marketing artisan goods, and the recognition of artisans as designers, DEED Lab seeks to create more sustainable and equitable ways for artisans and designers to collaborate.

Through its projects, research, and educational initiatives, DEED Lab contributes to the broader discourse on design's role in social innovation and sustainability. The lab's commitment to modeling sustainable futures for indigenous artisans and their children underscores its dedication to fostering inclusive and responsible design practices.
